A Job I Love or a Job that Pays?

Dear Birdy Slade,

I'm 22 and recently graduated from college. I've been struggling with making decisions about my future. I have a job offer in a field I'm not passionate about, but it pays well. On the other hand, there's an opportunity for an internship in a field I love, but it's unpaid and uncertain. My parents are pressuring me to take the job for financial stability, but my heart isn't in it. I'm afraid of making the wrong choice and regretting it. How can I decide what's best for my future?

At a Crossroads

Dear At a Crossroads,

You're at a pivotal moment in your life, and it's completely natural to feel torn. Making decisions about your future can be daunting, especially when they involve your passion and financial stability.

Here's something to consider: Reflect deeply on what matters most to you at this stage of your life. Is it gaining financial independence, or is it pursuing a career that truly excites you? Remember, there's no right or wrong answer here, just what feels right for you.

If you opt for the job, it doesn’t mean you're giving up on your dreams. It could be a stepping stone, providing you with financial stability while exploring your passion. If you choose the internship, yes, it's riskier, but it could be incredibly rewarding and a gateway to opportunities in a field you love.

Discuss your thoughts with someone you trust, be it a mentor, a friend, or a career counselor. Sometimes, talking it out can provide clarity. And remember, very few decisions are irreversible. Life is about learning and growing, and sometimes that means taking risks.

Finally, trust yourself. You know your capabilities and desires better than anyone else. Whichever path you choose, approach it with commitment and openness to learning.

Best of luck,
Birdy Slade
