Background and Origins of

Harvey Wallbanger

The Harvey Wallbanger is a classic cocktail with a somewhat mysterious origin story, though it is closely associated with the 1970s cocktail culture in America. The cocktail is a simple yet intriguing mix of vodka, Galliano liqueur, and orange juice. The most popular story behind the Harvey Wallbanger's creation involves a bartender named Donato "Duke" Antone, who is said to have invented the drink at his bar, the Blackwatch, in Los Angeles in the 1950s. According to the legend, a regular customer named Harvey, a Manhattan Beach surfer, enjoyed the drink so much that he would consume several of them in a single sitting. After indulging in a few too many, Harvey would allegedly stumble out of the bar, bumping into walls—hence the name "Harvey Wallbanger." Another part of the cocktail's rise to fame is credited to George Bednar, a marketing executive for McKesson Imports Company, which owned the Galliano brand. In the 1970s, Bednar launched an aggressive marketing campaign featuring the cartoon character Harvey Wallbanger, a laid-back, beach-loving surfer. The campaign included catchy slogans and colorful advertisements, helping to popularize the cocktail across the United States.
