Background and Origins of
Hemingway Daiquiri
The Hemingway Daiquiri, also known as the Papa Doble, has an interesting story behind it that ties directly to its namesake, the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway was known for his love of cocktails, and one of his favorites was the daiquiri, a classic Cuban drink made with rum, lime juice, and sugar. Hemingway first encountered the daiquiri at El Floridita, a famous bar in Havana, Cuba, which he frequented during the 1930s and 1940s. However, Hemingway had diabetes and needed to limit his sugar intake. So, the bartender at El Floridita, Constantino Ribalaigua Vert, modified the classic daiquiri recipe to suit Hemingway's taste and dietary needs. The result was a cocktail with double the rum, no sugar, and the addition of grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur to add complexity and flavor. The Hemingway Daiquiri, also known as the Papa Doble because Hemingway preferred it with a double shot of rum, became a favorite of the author. He reportedly could drink a dozen of them in one sitting. The cocktail is a reflection of Hemingway's larger-than-life persona and his penchant for strong, bold flavors.
