Background and Origins of
Last Word
The Last Word cocktail is a classic gin-based drink that first appeared in the early 20th century. It originated at the Detroit Athletic Club in the 1910s, shortly before the onset of Prohibition. Although it fell into obscurity for many years, the cocktail was revitalized during the early 2000s thanks to Seattle bartender Murray Stenson. He discovered the recipe in the old cocktail book "Bottoms Up!" and began serving it at the Zig Zag Café. This move sparked its resurgence, making it popular again, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, before spreading across the United States and into modern cocktail culture.
