Background and Origins of

Margarita

The most widely accepted story traces the Margarita back to the late 1930s or early 1940s. One popular tale credits its creation to a socialite named Margarita Sames, who purportedly invented the drink for her friends at a house party in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1948. Another account suggests that the cocktail was created by Carlos "Danny" Herrera at his restaurant, Rancho La Gloria, near Tijuana, Mexico, around 1938. According to this story, Herrera concocted the drink for a customer named Marjorie King, an actress who was allergic to all spirits except tequila but found straight tequila too harsh. Another notable legend involves a bartender named Don Carlos Orozco in Ensenada, Mexico, who is said to have created the drink in 1941. He reportedly served it to Margarita Henkel, the daughter of a German ambassador, and named it after her. The Margarita gained significant popularity in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s, coinciding with the rise of American tourism in Mexico. Its refreshing taste and exotic flair made it a favorite among travelers who brought the recipe back home. The cocktail's reputation continued to grow, and it became a staple in bars and restaurants across the country.
