Background and Origins of

Martini

The exact origins of the Martini are shrouded in mystery, with several competing theories about its creation. One popular story traces its roots back to the late 19th century in California. According to this account, the Martini was invented by a bartender named Jerry Thomas at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco. Thomas purportedly created the drink for a gold miner heading to the nearby town of Martinez, and it became known as the "Martinez Special." As the drink's popularity grew, it was eventually shortened to "Martini." Another theory suggests that the Martini was born in New York City at the Knickerbocker Hotel. In this version, a bartender named Martini di Arma di Taggia is credited with mixing the first Martini for John D. Rockefeller, using gin and dry vermouth with a dash of orange bitters. Regardless of its exact origin, the Martini became a sensation in the early 20th century. Its simplicity and elegance made it a favorite among socialites and celebrities. The drink's popularity surged during Prohibition in the United States when gin, which was easier to produce illegally than other spirits, became the base for many cocktails. Of course, the 007 magic of Bond, popularised the Martini and it is the best known cocktail in the world.
