The origins of the Moscow Mule can be traced back to the 1940s in the United States. The drink was born out of a unique collaboration between John G. Martin, an executive at Heublein (an American spirits and food company), and Jack Morgan, the owner of the Cock 'n' Bull pub in Los Angeles. Martin had recently acquired the rights to Smirnoff vodka, which was struggling to gain popularity in the American market, while Morgan was trying to promote his house-made ginger beer. As the story goes, the two men met at the Chatham Hotel in New York City, where they brainstormed ways to boost the sales of their respective products. They decided to combine the vodka with the ginger beer and added a squeeze of lime for an extra burst of flavor. The result was a refreshing and zesty cocktail that perfectly balanced the spiciness of the ginger beer with the smoothness of the vodka and the tartness of the lime. The distinctive copper mug that is now synonymous with the Moscow Mule was introduced by a woman named Sophie Berezinski. She had a large stock of copper mugs that her father had manufactured in Russia, and she was eager to sell them in the United States. Berezinski joined forces with Martin and Morgan, and the copper mug became the iconic vessel for the Moscow Mule, enhancing its appeal and helping to set it apart from other cocktails.
