Background and Origins of

Lynchburg Lemonade

Lynchburg Lemonade is a vibrant, citrusy cocktail named after Lynchburg, Tennessee, the home of the famous Jack Daniel's distillery. This refreshing drink combines the smooth taste of Tennessee whiskey with the tartness of lemon and the sweetness of triple sec and lemon-lime soda. The creation of Lynchburg Lemonade is often credited to Tony Mason, a bar owner in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1980, Mason claims he invented the cocktail as a way to feature Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey in a refreshing, summer-friendly drink. The story goes that Mason shared his recipe with a Jack Daniel's sales representative, who was impressed by the drink's potential. According to Mason, Jack Daniel's then used the recipe in their marketing without giving him proper credit, leading to a legal dispute. In 1987, Mason filed a lawsuit against Jack Daniel's, claiming that the company had stolen his recipe and used it to promote their whiskey. The court case brought significant attention to the Lynchburg Lemonade, further cementing its association with Jack Daniel's. Despite the legal battle, the cocktail's popularity continued to grow, and it became a staple in bars and restaurants across the United States.
